The basics of WoW you have to know are that you should specialize your character a bit if you want to win against other players. There are many differences between leveling and advancing a character for different aspects. For example a PvP character should have different abilities and skills than a character with which is only played in the RP mode.
Also you should know a little bit about the basic organisation of MMORPG`s like the words that are often used (imba, tank and so on) . Also the control of your WoW character and the use of his skills shuldn`t be completely strange to you.
